I moved to Kanchanaburi province early in 2024. Of the 77 provinces in Thailand, Kanchanaburi has always been one of my favourites. There’s so much to see and do here.

It’s the third-largest province in the country and covers 19,483 square kilometers—that’s pretty big. However, the city of Kanchanaburi, though, is just over 2 square kilometres. Even so, travellers still need to make decisions about where to stay.

Kanchanaburi Province covers a large area

As a confirmed local, here’s my guide to the best places to stay in Kanchanaburi. I’m going to cover stunning riverfront resorts, unique water raft accommodations, places to stay next to the party zone and where to stay in the CBD to save some dollars. Lastly, I’ll introduce you to the farmstay concept, very popular in the provinces outside Bangkok.

Before we begin, here is a quick table for those in a hurry!

Ok, let’s start with waterfront views.

Kanchanaburi Riverfront

The River Kwae is the lifeblood of the province, and it’s one of the main draws for tourists worldwide. Staying on or right next to the river is the most popular choice, and it makes sense.

Some riverfront properties even have bridge views

As the river runs right through the city, you can find a riverfront property in the middle of the action or further up or downstream for a more peaceful experience.

Pros of staying at a riverside hotel in Kanchanaburi:

  • Stunning views of the River Kwae particularly at sunrise and sunset.
  • Peaceful and relaxing atmosphere
  • Often high-end amenities and services
  • Close to nature

Things you should consider:

  • Potential for mosquitoes
  • Generally more expensive
  • May be further from city center attractions
  • Limited dining options outside the resort

With no futher ado here are our three favourite properties along the river are:

Cross River Kwai – 5 Star

Guest rating: 9.0 I Location: Riverfront I Book now

Cross River Kwai is on the Kwae Noi River, 11 km south of Kanchanaburi Central. Its location offers a serene escape from the city, but it’s close enough to go into town whenever you like—by boat or car!

It’s one of Paula’s favourite properties in the entire province, and she’s written a very detailed article about it.

Cross offers a range of options from luxe 2-bedroom villas to two styles of floating raft-style cabins complete with their own kayak for exploring the river.

If you want to be close enough not to waste too long traveling to sights but still want to feel remote this is the hotel for you.

Cost: from 5k to 17k Baht

Villa La Flora Kanchanaburi – 3 star

Guest rating 9.5 I Location: Riverfront I Book now

When we were building her house, Mum stayed at the charming Villa La Flora. She described it as an ‘Enchanted English Garden,’ and that description is perfect. Each of the little houses is named after flowers.

Villa La Flora is 6 km north of the city on the Kwae Yai River, and at the end of the pool is a small jetty onto it.

They offer garden view rooms, pool access rooms and even a pool villa.

These River Kwae waterfront properties are at the top of our list for a stay soon:

Riverfront properties are amazing, and I’ve never been disappointed. But for something even more unique, check out the next section.

Kwai River Rafts

Taking the river concept one step further, you can actually stay at a floating raft hotel. Don’t worry; the rafts are attached to the riverbanks and can’t escape. They’re a wonderful way to feel close to nature, and the gentle rocking as small waves are created from passing boats makes for a comforting sleep.

Floating accommodation in Kanchanaburi comes in all shapes and sizes

Choose from ones on a secluded part of the river or a few that are grouped together and not far from Pub Street.

The positive aspects of a raft hotel stay:

  • Unique, memorable experience
  • Close connection with nature
  • Often more budget-friendly options available
  • Peaceful surroundings

Things to consider before booking raft accommodation in Kanchanaburi:

  • Basic amenities in some cases
  • Potential for noise from passing boats
  • May not be suitable for those prone to motion sickness
  • Limited mobility options

Local Tip: The best time to experience river rafts is during the cool season (November to February) when the water levels are ideal and the weather is pleasant.

The Float House River Kwai

Guest rating: 8.3 I Location: Sai Yok I Book now

Who: Comfort creatures in the great outdoors

Unlike the more rustic Jungle Rafts, The Float House brings a touch of luxury to your river adventure. Each villa comes with air conditioning, a big TV, and even a fancy rainshower. But don’t worry, you’ll still feel close to nature with your own sun deck overlooking the river.

Hungry after all that adventure? The Pontoon Restaurant serves up tasty Thai and European dishes. And don’t miss sunset at the Moon Lounge & Bar – it’s the perfect spot to unwind with a drink and soak in the river views.

The Float House gives you the best of both worlds – the thrill of staying on the river with all the comforts of a fancy hotel. It’s a great choice if you want a unique experience without roughing it too much!

The really good thing about these river raft resorts is that there are some budget ones, where you still get the same ‘sleeping on the river’ experience, but for considerably less. One of the budget raft properties that I stayed in is:

Tara Raft Kanchanaburi

Guest rating: 6.2 I Location: Riverfront on Pub Street I Book now

Who: Budget travellers who don’t want to miss the raft experience

Tara Raft is one of a few budget raft resorts in a row, 400 meters from Pub Street. Imagine waking up to this! Its reviews are mixed but having stayed here myself I think it’s a reasonable option for budget travellers.

The view of River Kwai from our bed at Tara Raft
The view from our bed at Tara Raft

For less than 1000 baht per night you can sleep in a comfortable bed on a floating raft.

The accommodations, even at the 2-star no frills hotel, are surprisingly good. The reviews are not glowing but I had one of the best nights of sleep here. The rocking motion of the river is ever-so-slight.

Our no frills room

This property is accessed by stairs so may not suit anyone with mobility issues. It is however only 450 metres from the railway station so will suit backpackers well.

So whether you have a large budget or need to save a few pennies, you can still experience a water raft hotel while in Kanchanaburi.

Where: 15/1 Soi Prapa, T. Ban Nua , A. Muang, Kanchanaburi
Cost: 800 – 1000 Baht

If the idea of staying on a raft is not for you but you still want to stay somewhere really unique, this train carriage might be just the thing.

Pub Street aka River Kwai Road

Ok, so on to Pub Street, its real name is River Kwai Road and it’s a 3 km stretch that starts at the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery and ends at the River Kwai Bridge.

The reason we call it Pub Street is pretty obvious; each side of the street is adorned with cafes, bars, restaurants, and massage shops. It’s kind of the ‘entertainment’ area of the city.

This location is spot-on for travellers who like to stumble back to their hotel after a night out.

Reasons to choose to stay on “Pub Street”

  • Close to nightlife and entertainment
  • Wide range of dining options
  • Easy access to tour operators and travel services
  • Lively atmosphere

However you might find:

  • Can be noisy, especially at night
  • May feel touristy
  • Potentially slightly higher prices for food and drinks
  • Less peaceful than other areas

Natee The Riverfront

Guest rating: 8.5 I Location: Riverfront on Pub Street I Book now

Who: Travelers who want comfort and convenience

Natee The Riverfront is halfway along Pub Street and is right on the river. Our editor Paula loved this hotel; she booked a pool access room and said it was perfect after a hot day exploring!

Natee Riverside backs directly onto the river

It’s just over 1km from Kanchanaburi Railway Station and 2km from the famous Bridge on the River Kwai, so you’re close to all the action. But don’t worry about noise – the rooms are comfy and quiet. The hotel has an outdoor pool and a restaurant; some rooms even have hot tubs.

Natee pool access room will have you cooled down in no time!

The onsite restaurant serves up American and French dishes, and there’s a snack bar for quick bites and cocktails. In the morning, choose from buffet, continental, or American breakfast to fuel up for your adventures.

Want to explore? The hotel can set you up with bikes to cruise around town. And if you need any help, the 24-hour front desk staff speaks English and Thai.

Good Times Resort

Guest rating: 9.0 I Location: Riverfront on Pub Street I Book now

Who: Travelers looking for a peaceful riverside retreat with easy access to attractions

Good Times Resort delivers on its promise! Nestled close to the iconic River Kwai Bridge and a short drive from the city centre, it’s ideally located for sightseeing.

The resort features two inviting pools, with the main one spacious enough for a proper swim.

Accommodations are well-appointed and comfortable. There are a variety of room styles including large triple bed rooms that work well for families.

The on-site restaurant, perched by the river, offers a range of local flavors. Start your day with a varied breakfast spread while enjoying the waterfront view.

Good Times Restaurant is open to all for lunch and dinner

The helpful reception team can arrange local tours, transportation, and even cooking classes for those interested in Thai cuisine.

While you’re within reach of local nightlife and shopping, the resort maintains a peaceful atmosphere. With complimentary internet and car parking, it offers excellent value.

Where: 265/5 Maenam Kwai Rd., Tha Makham, A. Muang, 71000 Kanchanaburi
Cost:
1.5-4k Baht

Ok, so being in the heart of the action can be a bit overwhelming, and let’s be honest, it can get a bit rowdy, so another option is to stay somewhere close by in the city.

Kanchanaburi CBD

If you’re looking to save some money but still want to be close to the action, the CBD (Central Business District) has some attractive options. This would not be my first choice as the area is quite busy and you will find yourself far from the most important sites. If you are on a tight budget they can be a good way to keep costs down.

Reasons to consider a CBD stay in Kanchanaburi:

  • Often more budget-friendly options
  • Central location with easy access to amenities
  • Diverse shopping
  • Convenient for public transportation into the city

The negatives to consider include:

  • Less scenic than riverfront locations
  • Can be busy and noisy
  • Further from main tourist attractions
  • Less holiday resort feel

HOP Inn

Guest rating: 8.5 I Location: City Centre I Book now

Who: Travellers on a budget with their own transport.

HOP Inn is a budget hotel that is popular in Thailand. You will find this one not far from the Robinson Lifestyle Shopping Mall and 2 km from the Skywalk on the river. There aren’t any facilities here like a pool or restaurant, but it’s convenient to cafes and other eateries and a comfortable place to sleep while saving money.

V1 Boutique Hotel Kanchanaburi

Guest rating: 8.6 I Location: City Centre I Book now

Who: Travelers looking for a comfortable, central stay with easy access to transportation

V1 Boutique Hotel offers a modern, clean stay in the heart of Kanchanaburi. Located just 1.2 km from The Jeath War Museum and a 5-minute walk from the bus station, it’s ideal for those prioritizing convenience.

The 4-star hotel features air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi, flat-screen TVs, and private bathrooms. Guests rave about the comfortable beds and silent air conditioning.

A shared lounge and bar are available on-site, and the friendly staff can help organize tours. While there aren’t many dining options within immediate walking distance, the hotel offers complimentary croissants and coffee in the morning.

It’s worth noting that popular riverside areas are a short drive away, so this hotel is best suited for those with their own transport or who don’t mind using local taxis.

Where: Ban Tai, Mueang Kanchanaburi District, Kanchanaburi
Cost: 1.3k – 4.5 Baht

As I mentioned at the start, Kanchanaburi is a huge province, and not all the attractions are in the city. Sometimes, staying nearby has its benefits.

Properties Near Attractions

Two of Kanchanaburi’s most visited attractions are Erawan Falls in Erawan National Park and Hellfire Pass. They’re 65 and 85 km from the city’s centre, respectively. It’s just over an hour’s drive in ideal conditions, but for early risers who want to beat the tour buses, staying close by has its advantages.

Sleeping near the national parks allows means you have early morning access

Why should you consider staying outside the central area of the city:

  • Early access to popular attractions before crowds arrive
  • Surrounded by natural beauty
  • Quieter, more relaxed atmosphere
  • Opportunity for deeper exploration of specific sites

However the downside is:

  • Further from other attractions
  • Limited dining and entertainment options
  • May require own transport or reliance on tours
  • Potentially higher prices due to remote location

If you have a few days it makes sense to split your time between one of these locations and the main part of town for a complete experience without long days driving.

Hellfire Pass

The site of a section of the Death Railway that now serves as a memorial to all the lives lost. It’s the place many Aussies go for Anzac Day in Kanchanaburi, and we’ll be attending the next one.

River Kwai Jungle Rafts

Guest rating: 8.3 I Location: Sai Yok I Book now

Who: Nature lovers looking for a digital detox

Nestled on the Kwai Noi River, surrounded by the lush greenery of Sai Yok National Park, River Kwai Jungle Rafts offers a rustic eco-friendly experience.

These floating accommodations are a great place for a digital detox with no electricity, which encourages you to connect with your surroundings instead of your devices!

The traditional Mon-style rooms are basic but comfortable. You have your own balcony area with a hammock and direct river access, perfect for a quick swim or paddle. Rooms are lit by oil lamps and you have a mosquito net to ensure a good night’s sleep with the fresh breeze.

It’s a short drive to Hellfire Pass and Sai Yok Noi waterfall. Your stay includes meals, which is handy given the remote location.

Where: Baan Tahsao, Amphur Saiyoke, Kanchanaburi, 70150 Sai Yok
Cost:
4.5k-12k baht – includes dinner and breakfast

Erawan National Park

It is the home of Erawan Falls, an amazing hike with seven levels if you have the stamina. I made it to level 5, and Paula went all the way and has plenty to say about it.

Z9 Resort

Guest rating: 8.6 I Location: Si Sawat District I Book now

Who: Travellers looking for a unique stay in luxury.

This river raft experience is a little more luxurious than the others, and if the budget allows, it’s the one to choose. Located 12 km from either Erawan Falls or Sai Yok National Park, it’s the perfect choice for anyone planning to visit the parks for hiking or chasing waterfalls.

Stay in a floating pod on the Kwae River

These 50 sqm pods sit on the river, but don’t worry—they’re attached. They have all the modern comforts, air conditioning, cable TV and high quality fittings.

If you are looking for a truly special experience, the floating villa here is next level. It offers a private pool overlooking the river.

Free paddleboard or kayak allow you to explore your surroundings and work up an appetite before you hit the on-site restaurant.

Wait until you see a sunset from the terrace!

Homestays – A More Personal Touch

Hotels and resorts are excellent places to stay. However, once the staff has handed over the keys, you’re left to your own devices. And for many people, that’s okay. However, for visitors who like to interact with their hosts, homestays are an excellent choice.

Often called B&Bs, they’re usually add-on properties to a person’s existing house, and guests get extra care, attention, and pampering. What’s not to love?

A homestay will offer you:

  • An authentic local experience
  • Personal interaction with hosts
  • Often some homemade meals
  • Insights into local culture and lifestyle

However you should know you may find:

  • May have more basic amenities
  • Less privacy than hotels
  • Potential language barriers
  • Location may be less convenient for sightseeing

Baan Suan Lonsuk

Okay, this is a shameless plug for my business. My husband and I run a homestay called Baan Suan Lonsuk (which translates to Garden of Overflowing Happiness) in the Tha Muang district of Kanchanaburi. We’re only 15 minutes away from the famous Wat Tham Suea (Tiger Temple) and 30 minutes from the heart of the city.

Lush bushland surrounds Baan Suan Lonsuk

Guests can choose from room-only options to a complete package with Kanchanaburi city transfers, breakfast, a BBQ dinner (my husband cooks the best Pad Kra Pow in Thailand), and tours of temples or memorials. We even have special event stays like Anzac Day at Hellfire Pass, and as half-marathon runners, we offer packages including accommodation and transfers to and from the local running events.

Getting Around Kanchanaburi

Kanchanaburi is quite spread out and distances between attractions can be significant. Having our own transport is ideal because of the flexibility it offers you, but it is possible to explore using public transport.

The city has songthaews that travel between the bus station, the train station and the famous Bridge on the River Kwai. Motorcycle taxis and tuk tuks operate much as they do in other parts of the country. Agree on your fare before you get in.

While there are local buses between Kanchanaburi and Erawan National Park and Sai Yok, they can be pretty crowded and it’s never a quick journey.

You will also find longtail boats at piers near the River Kwai Bridge if you would like to explore the waterfront or visit a riverside restaurant.

So, Where Should You Stay in Kanchanaburi?

That’s a legitimate question, and I hope I’ve answered it for you here. It all comes down to your plans while you are here. Sadly, most people visiting my wonderful province are only here for a few days, so to maximise their stay, they should choose somewhere close to what they like.

If partying is high on your list, stay at one of the hotels along Pub Street. For those on a budget, a CBD hotel around 1 km from there may be right for you.

If you’re here for Hellfire Pass or Erawan Falls, staying on the river near them is a savvy choice. For a more inclusive experience, those here for a few days may want to stay at a luxury riverside resort or a local homestay.
