Bangkok might be best known for its busy streets, giant shopping malls and neon nightlife. However it also has a lot to offer in the way of family adventure. The city offers a plenty of fun stuff for kids of all ages, from interactive museums to fun waterparks and exciting boat rides, you just need to know where to find it.

The city’s rich cultural heritage also provides lots of educational opportunities that you can weave into your plans without them even knowing! Over the years we have bought our own kids here and are now planning for when the grandkids come to visit so we have roadtested most of the places we recommend below.

Safety First: Why Bangkok is Ideal for Families

One of the first questions that pop into any parent’s mind is: “Is it safe for my family? Thailand is considered a safe destination for families. Friendly locals, good medical facilities and well-maintained tourist areas make it a reassuring choice for family travel.

Bangkok hospitals offer some of the best facilities in the world with English speaking staff and affordable prices. Plus, pharmacies are well-stocked with everything you might need. Before you set off, ensure you have travel insurance. Trust me, it’s a lifesaver if any unforeseen hiccups come your way.

Things to do in Bangkok for kids 3 to 5 years

Traveling with toddlers in tow? No problem! Bangkok has plenty of attractions that will captivate the youngest family members.

Just remember, navigating the city with a stroller can be tricky—so a well-located hotel and pre-booked drivers can be lifesavers. Choose a well-located hotel to minimise your time on public transport.

Here are some must-visit spots in Bangkok perfect for tiny travelers aged 3 to 5.

Children’s Discovery Museum

Start your adventure at the Children’s Discovery Museum in Chatuchak. This place for young kids to explore and learn through play. The museum features interactive exhibits and hands-on activities designed for little ones. From digging for dinosaur bones to playing in the water park, there’s something for every curious mind. The outdoor playground is a hit, with plenty of space to run around and burn off energy.

Tip: Combine this with a visit to Chatuchak Weekend Market for mum and dad!

Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World

Located in Siam Paragon, Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World offers an enchanting underwater adventure. Marvel at marine life, walk through the glass tunnel and get close with sea creatures in the touch pool.

The slow pace and engaging displays keep the little ones fascinated.

Lumpini Park

Lumphini Park in Bangkok is great for outdoor activities and spotting the famous monitor lizards, which resemble crocodiles.

njoy the free swan boats on the lake, spend time in the playground and maybe make a local friend, or just burn off energy on the lawns. The park is a peaceful retreat from the city’s pace, giving you a chance to relax and enjoy nature.

Tip: Get fried chicken from Polo Fried Chicken for a picnic lunch.

Fantasia Lagoon

Located on the roof of The Mall Bangkae, Fantasia Lagoon is a delightful water park designed for young children. The park features shallow pools, gentle slides and water play areas where toddlers can splash around safely. It’s a great place to cool off on a hot day, with shaded spots for you to relax while watching.

Things to do in Bangkok for Children 5-12 years

Catering to kids aged 5-12 means finding a sweet spot between fun and learning—something Bangkok does exceptionally well. Think interactive museums, hands-on activities and engaging shows.

These attractions not only entertain but also introduce kids to Thai culture and science in a way that’s anything but boring. Ready to keep those curious minds busy? Here are some top picks for school-age kids that will make your trip both fun and educational.

Museum Siam

I found Museum Siam engaging. It offers a modern take on Thai history and culture through well-designed exhibits and multimedia displays. It allows you to explore Thailand’s past and present in a hands-on way.

An educational and entertaining experience for all ages. A great destination for families and anyone interested in learning about Thailand’s rich heritage.

Tip: Its location makes it a great break from the heat after visiting Wat Pho or the Grand Palace.

WOW Park

Wow Park in Bangkok is an interactive amusement park that offers a blend of education and entertainment for kids, teenagers, and adults.

• Relax on a bed of nails.

This theme park pushes boundaries with experiments and activities. You can take impressive pictures, play games, and learn fascinating new things.

Wow Park is an optical illusion museum and entertainment centre all rolled into one.

Joe Louis Puppet Theatre

Experience traditional Thai Culture at Joe Louis Thai Puppet Theatre.These captivating puppets bring Thai myths and legends to life.

The intricate puppetry, storytelling, and live music provide a glimpse into Thai heritage and arts. These performances are entertaining and educational, making them a perfect activity to explore Thai culture.

Things to do in Bangkok for Teens

The teenage years are when Bangkok truly shines. Whether your teen loves shopping, adventure, or just hanging out, Bangkok has something that will keep them entertained and coming back for more. Want to know the best spots? The teen-approved activities that will make your trip a hit.

MBK Center and Siam Square

MBK Center is a shopping mall paradise for teens, offering affordable fashion, gadgets and souvenirs. The top floor has an arcade and entertainment options, making it a fun place for them to hang out.

My teenage daughter loved shopping here. The prices mean she was able to buy most of the things on her very long shopping list!

Just a short walk away is Siam Square a youth focused mall with local and international fashion aimed at this age group. There is also a Liverpool supporters store for any football lovers. On the basement level is a large Eve and Boy beauty store that is popular in our family.

Escape Room Bangkok

Escape rooms have taken off in the last few years and Bangkok has not missed the ride. I think these are a perfect family bonding experience. Challenge your teens with puzzle-solving and teamwork, it’s very likely they will beat your!

Work to solve clues and escape within a time limit. The rooms offer various themes, meaning you can do a couple of rooms if you are enjoying the experience.

Madame Tussauds Bangkok

Madame Tussauds, you likely know the drill here. The Bangkok version is no different but it is indoors and airconditioned!

Get up close and personal with over 90 celebrities, take photos interactiving with the wax models. Sing for the X Factor judges, sit on a private jet with One Directions or have a chat with Mark Zuckerburg and tell him what you think of Facebook!

There are plenty of educational opportunities too with famous scientist, politicians and sports stars. Learn about their lives and achievements. It’s a fun and engaging place that combines entertainment with education.

Tip: There are some good deals on combo tickets with Sea Life Bangkok.

Muay Thai Live

Muay Thai Matches at Rajadamnern Stadium offer a chance to experience Thailand’s national sport. Located in the heart of Bangkok, it is one of the oldest and most prestigious venues for this martial art.

The matches feature top fighters from Thailand and around the world, showcasing skill and athleticism. The atmosphere is electric, with enthusiastic crowds cheering on their favorite competitors.

Attending a Muay Thai match at Rajadamnern Stadium is a cultural experience that provides insight into Thai traditions and the competitive spirit of the fighters.

Dream World

We had a fun day at Dream World Bangkok. I thought the park was well-organized and clean, with a good range of rides and attractions for families.

From adrenaline-pumping rides to live performances, there’s something to keep every teenager entertained.

For me, the highlight Snow Town is a perfect escape if the heat of Thailand is getting to you. I think this is a cool escape that both kids and adults will love. You can ride sleds or play in the snow.

There are a few fun places to take some fun family snaps. The miniture seven wonders of the world are a good place to start but there are 3 other zones including crazy zone that younger kids will enjoy.

Chatuchak Weekend Market

Chatuchak is one of the world’s largest markets. It’s as popular with locals as it is with visitors meaning it can seem to be the most crowded place in the world at times!

I would not bring young kids here, there is not much for them to do and the crowds make walking with little ones hard. Your teenagers will likely love it though. There is loads of fashion and accessories, some of it unique and not just knock offs.

Tip: Part of Chatuchak market is open on Friday nights, if you visit then you can jump back on the BTS and go a few stops further on to the new Jodds fair. It’s an instgrammers dream and very popyular with local teens. It’s an intersting comparision.

Mahanakhon Glass Skywalk

For a breathtaking view of Bangkok, head to the Mahanakhon Glass Skywalk. Located atop one of the tallest buildings in the city, the Glass Skywalk offers a thrilling experience as you walk on a transparent floor 310 meters above the ground. This sky-high adventure is thrilling for teens and awe-inspiring for adults.

Tip: Visit during sunset for an extraordinary view that includes both the bustling city below and the beautiful shades of the sky.

Things to do in Bangkok for the whole family

Finding activities that everyone in the family can enjoy can be a tall order, but not in Bangkok. Here, you’ll find a mix of fun that spans all ages—from boat tours along the Chao Phraya to immersive cooking classes.

These activities are perfect for creating those special family memories. So, gather the whole crew and vote on which of these fun family-friendly outings you will do first.

Chao Phraya Tourist Hop on Hop off ferry

The Hop-On Hop-Off Tourist Boat is a great way to explore Bangkok’s riverside attractions at your own pace.

The boat offers a relaxing way to travel, with flexible tickets allowing you to hop on and off throughout the day. It has comfortable seating and unlike the regular express boats it’s a flat step on and off making it easy if you are travelling with small kids or a pram

This service stops at key points along the Chao Phraya River, including popular sites like the Grand Palace, Wat Arun, and Asiatique The Riverfront. Check out guide to some easy walks you can take at each of the stops.

Siam Amazing Park

Siam Amazing Park offers you two for one, a theme park and a water park, the perfect combination in Bangkok’s year round heat. There is a junior coaster for the little ones and the Mega Coaster for any brave teens. It’s not Disneyland so don’t expect it to be cutting edge, however it is fun and with no beach anywhere near Bangkok it’s a good spot for some water play.

I think it’s the waterpark that is the best part of the visit though, especpailly the large wave pool. If you book your ticket via Get Your Guide you get a free buffet lunch included. Tickets are also cheaper online that at the gate.

Eat and Ride in a tuk tuk

If you have been reluctant to book at tuk tuk thanks to all the scam stories you have heard, then a formal tuk tuk tour is a good option and it removes any worries about working out how much to pay your driver and where you will end up! I recommend a tour like the Midnight Food Tour by Tuk-Tuk (It doesn’t leave at midnight)!

Asiatique

Asiatique The Riverfront is an open-air mall and night market that is easy to get to. Is it the best night market in Bangkok? No, but it offers a mix of shopping, dining, and entertainment, making it a perfect destination for families.

The Asiatique Sky Ferris Wheel is a great alternative to a rooftop bar when you are hunting down a skyline view with kids in tow! The ride that may not seem all that exciting to teens but even they will be wowed by the view up here at night.

There are carnival games to chew through your spare cash and a small amusement area suitable for younger children. There is usually a good buzz here and the huge range of food options make it a fun family outing with something for everyone.

Tip: If you are only travelling with teens you may prefer a visit to Jodds Fair Night market for clothing and accessories.

Cooking Classes

Enroll the family in a Thai cooking class. It’s a fun and educational activity where everyone can learn to make delicious Thai food. Many classes begin with a trip to the local fresh market to choose ingredients which adds a cultural element and is a great way for kids to learn about different types of food and ways of shopping.

Doing a class early in your trip may result in you all finding new flavours to enjoy while you are here. I don’t know about your kids but mine were always more likely to try something if someone other than me was suggesting it!

Classes are family-friendly, allowing children to participate in cooking. It’s a great way to spend time together and gain a new skill. Most classes allow you to choose from a variety of dishes so the kids can enjoy too.

Where: There are lots of great options, choose one that is easy to reach from your accommodation
When: Most classes offer full day and half day classes, half day is usually plenty for kids!

The class is great for familes

Animal Experiences in Thailand

Many animal experiences in Thailand don’t adhere to current ethical treatment guidelines, especially in and around Bangkok. So, we have chosen not to include any in Bangkok.

Many Elephant experiences in Thailand are unethical, and we have not found any near the capital we can recommend. Before visiting a sanctuary, read the linked article above.

If you have some time there are some deserving ones are in neighbouring provinces. Two we recommend are I Love Phants – a few hours south, with transport from Bangkok, and Elephant Haven, Sai Yok, Kanchanaburi.

There are ethical experiences in Chiang Mai, Phuket and Lampang too.
